Galvan Industries has been selected to provide the hot dip galvanizing of curved steel arches for the new REM light rail system under construction in Montreal, Québec, Canada.

It is the largest such project undertaken in Québec in 50 years, more than 41 miles in total length. Galvan’s work will be used in the rehabilitation of the existing Mont-Royal Tunnel.

The REM will run through the tunnel, a century-old underground railway infrastructure located under McGill College Avenue. The tunnel has been severely degraded over many years of use. The new galvanized steel arches are part of major repairs needed to integrate the tunnel into the new system. This work will be done underground, directly inside the tunnel.

Hot dip galvanizing is a smart choice for light rail applications. Hot-dip galvanized steel withstands exposure to the elements while providing decades of maintenance-free service and a clean modern aesthetic. Galvanized steel not only extends the life of such projects,  it eliminates service interruptions caused by maintenance or corrosion-related deterioration, and reduces the cost of ownership.

Our expertise in handling large or “difficult” pieces, beyond the capabilities of some galvanizers, makes Galvan Industries a smart choice, too. Galvan has extensive experience in galvanizing transportation infrastructure, including the Hololulu Light Rail System and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, plus H-piles, pipe piles, galvanized reinforcing steel and guard rail components for numerous interstate highway construction projects.
