Saturday, April 20 was a beautiful day in Harrisburg, NC. Hundreds of runners, family and friends showed up at the Harrisburg Park on Sims Parkway early that morning for the town’s 17th Annual Run the Burg 5K.
More than 400 people raced in the 5K on a 3.1-mile course in and around the park. Many others participated in the 1-mile fun run afterward.
Galvan Industries, Inc. supported the event as a Gold Sponsor. The company also provided branded towels and water bottles for participants in the race. Galvan employees Kristi Wilson, Joann Gramm and Wesley Fritsche staffed a table with gifts for the runners.
Harrisburg YMCA, Harrisburg Parks & Recreation and the Southwest Cabarrus Rotary Club partnered with local sponsors, including Galvan Industries, to present the event, with the goal of promoting recreation and local businesses in Harrisburg.
The 5K race started at 8 a.m. Chase Tomkins, 16, of Concord, NC crossed the finish line first, just 16 minutes and 56 seconds later.
Three runners represented Galvan in the 5K race. National Sales Manager for Galvanizing Services, Ben Kelly, and his 12-year-old son, Nathan, participated in the run, along with Laurens Willard, Jr., Galvan’s Plant Operations Manager. Nathan finished 5th in his age group, 42nd overall. Laurens and Ben finished 5th and 25th, respectively in their age group, 56th and 202nd overall.
Kristi Wilson, Senior Human Resources Manager, said, “We’d love to encourage more Galvan employees to participate in this event next year, as runners or volunteers. Being active and getting to know our neighbors is fun and it’s important to our company’s relationship with the community.”
Founded in 1958, Galvan has been a part of the Harrisburg-area business community for more than 60 years. The company is committed to being a good corporate citizen, building working relationships with the town and local non-profit groups.
