The Pearl is a 26-acre medical innovation district in Charlotte, NC, centered around the campus of the city’s first medical school, currently under construction. It is located just outside of Uptown Charlotte at the intersection of Baxter and South McDowell streets.

The project is a public-private partnership between Atrium Health, Baltimore-based Wexford Science + Technology, the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. The innovation district will be a multiphase, mixed-use development featuring office, lab, retail, and residential components — including affordable housing, community gathering and academic spaces.

The Pearl will be home to the city’s first four-year medical school, the Charlotte campus of Wake Forest School of Medicine, which will anchor the Howard R. Levine Center for Education in the heart of The Pearl. The Howard R. Levine Foundation provided a $25 million gift to name The Pearl’s signature building. The North American headquarters of IRCAD, a France-based, global surgical training center, will also be located in the district.

Atrium Health plans to invest $1.5 billion in the development, which is expected to create 5,500 onsite jobs and 11,500 jobs in the Charlotte area over the 15 years build out. The focus of the district will be medical research and developing businesses, creating housing, and public spaces with amenities to create a livable and vibrant community. The district will support 63,000 jobs beyond its borders in the Charlotte area and is expected to have a $7.6 billion annual impact on the economy by 2040.

“Of course, we are very happy to have the opportunity to be involved in such a historic project,” said Galvan President Laurens Willard. “Our work will reduce the need for future maintenance, which means we’re protecting the steel, protecting our customer’s investment and protecting our environment while meeting the project’s high standards. We’re proud of that.”
