The largest and most advanced cell culture biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in North America is being built in Holly Springs, NC, by FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, a world leading contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO).

This $2 billion project is historic. It will be the largest life sciences investment ever announced in the state of North Carolina, putting Holly Springs and Wake County on the map as one of the nation’s leading sites for growth in the biopharmaceutical field. The new facility will bring 725 new jobs to the area by the end of 2028.

The advanced manufacturing plant is “a facility that is designed and built with sustainability as its core,” said Martin Meeson, chief executive officer, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies.

Hot dip galvanizing by Galvan Industries was chosen for rust-proofing the steel used in the project. Galvanized steel is uniquely sustainable and environmentally friendly. Thanks to its use of naturally occurring zinc metal, 100% recyclability, speed of application, delivery to the job site, aesthetic durability, and decades of maintenance-free effectiveness in rust prevention, hot-dip galvanizing offers unparalleled performance and sustainability benefits compared to other corrosion protection methods.

The massive beams used in the project weigh more than 10,000 pounds each. Galvan’s extensive experience in handling large structural steel fabrications like these was important. Galvan also handled pick-up and delivery of the steel, a value-added service not offered by every galvanizer.

The FUJIFILM manufacturing facility will occupy 150 acres within Oakview Innovation Park and will contain nearly 1 million square feet of manufacturing space. It is expected to be operational by spring 2025. Once open, the facility will develop, produce, package and ship medicines approved by the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory bodies across the country and around the world.

“Galvan is proud to be a part of a project so important to our state and to the health of people around the world,” said Galvan President Laurens Willard.
